KEE

Primary Roof Covering – KEE (ketone ethylene ester) is a solid, flexible polymer used in some low-slope roof membranes to help maintain flexibility and resist chemical and weather exposure.

How Is KEE Used in Roofing?

KEE is used in some high-performance thermoplastic roof membranes where it is combined with PVC. Unlike the liquid plasticizers traditionally used to keep PVC flexible, KEE is a solid polymer that is much less likely to migrate out of the membrane as it ages, extending roof service life. This helps the roofing material remain flexible while improving its resistance to chemicals and harsh environmental conditions.

FiberTite is an example of a KEE-based roof membrane. Its membrane combines a PVC/KEE coating with a tightly constructed reinforcing fabric, producing a roof covering intended for demanding commercial environments where chemical exposure, punctures, and long-term durability are concerns.

Because KEE can either be a principal polymer in the membrane or an ingredient added to PVC, a KEE roof membrane and a PVC membrane containing KEE are not strictly the same thing. A membrane using at least 50 percent KEE polymer is classified as a KEE membrane.
