Why Is PVC Used on Commercial Roofs?

PVC is manufactured in reinforced sheets that are installed across a low-slope roof and heat-welded, creating a continuous waterproof surface. Like TPO, PVC is a thermoplastic, meaning the material can be softened with heat and welded together rather than relying on tape or adhesive at its seams.

PVC is commonly used for restaurants, food-processing facilities, airports, and industrial buildings because many PVC membranes resist grease, animal fats, fuels, and other chemicals that may reach the roof through exhaust. Restaurants are a particularly common use because kitchen exhaust will continually deposit grease and oil onto the roof around vents.

Different PVC formulations provide different levels of chemical resistance. For buildings with especially demanding conditions, KEE may be incorporated into the membrane to improve chemical resistance and help the material retain flexibility as it ages.
