How Thermal Movement Affects Roofing

Thermal movement is most noticeable on materials like metal panels, flashing, and long membrane runs where movement’s effects accumulate over distance. As temperatures change throughout the day and across seasons, roofing materials repeatedly expand and contract. If that movement is not accounted for in the roof’s design, it can cause stress at seams, fasteners, and transitions.

Roof systems often include expansion joints, specific fastening patterns, and h-clips to account for this movement and prevent damage.
