Coping caps along the perimeter of a low-slope membrane roof with HVAC units and pipe penetrations.

Coping Cap

Component - A coping cap is a covering installed on top of a wall at the roof edge that covers and protects where the roof covering ends.

Where Coping Caps Are Used

Coping caps are typically installed on commercial low-slope roofs along the top of parapet walls at the roof edge, where the roof meets a vertical wall. At this point in the roof system, the membrane can either be terminated and sealed at the wall or carried up and protected with a coping cap.

A coping cap covers the membrane edge from above and overlaps both sides of the wall so water sheds away from it.

They are most often fabricated from metal and installed in sections with joints that allow for thermal movement. If these joints open over time, water can enter at the top of the wall and lead to leaks that appear along the roof edge or inside the building.
