Roof Deck

Components - A roof deck is the structural surface connected to a building’s framing that supports the roof system installed above it.

What Is the Purpose of Roof Decks in Roofing Systems

The roof deck forms the foundation of most steep-slope and low-slope roof systems. It is attached directly to the building’s structural members, creating a continuous, stable surface where roofing materials can be securely fastened.

Because it affects how a roof system can be installed and the scope of repairs, the type and condition of the roof deck are often evaluated during inspections, roof replacements, and diagnostic work like pull tests or core samples.

Residential buildings almost always use wood-based roof decking such as plywood, OSB, or plank decking. Commercial buildings may use other deck materials such as metal or concrete, depending on the type of building.
