Spring Maintenance Tips For Home Exteriors

by Jun 15, 2018

Spring is here and with that, comes the usual spring cleaning! Most of us focus on cleaning the interior of our homes: rooms, closets, attics and basements, but the exterior maintenance is just as important.

Help your yard out!

Wash away any salt damage from the winter months by spraying any affected plants and soak the soil. Spread some extra seed around for a nice full, healthy look. To ensure good drainage, make sure the soil around your house slopes away from the foundation at least 6 vertical inches over 10 ft. Doing this will help prevent mold, mildew, termites, and basement leaks.

Check foundation vents

These vents help prevent debris and animals from crawling into your home. Check the screens for any holes and replace them as needed.

Repair paint

Pressure wash the outside of your house to remove dirt from the elements. Assess the paint for any chips or areas where it may be peeling and spot paint. Painting over the damaged sections helps prevent wood rot. You do not want to leave any wood exposed!

Clean your gutters

Remove any leaves and debris that may have collected in your gutters to keep them clear for the rainy season ahead. Trim any tree overgrowth near your home about 5-7 feet away from the house to help with debris buildup. Watch for excessive amounts of loose granules collected in your gutters if you have an asphalt roof, this may mean it’s time for a new roof.

Check for roof damage

From the ground or by safely using a ladder, look for buckling, curling, or blistering shingles. If you notice any of these issues call a professional roofer for a roof assessment
